The House of Representatives committee on maritime safety, education and administration has commended the Director General and Management of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency for the efforts in advancing Nigeria’s maritime sector, particularly in the areas of safety, security, and regulatory oversight.
The chairman of the committee, Mrs Khadija Bukar Ibrahim, gave the commendation during the NIMASA budget defence session with the committee in Abuja.
She said that the work of NIMASA remains vital to the protection of Nigeria’s territorial waters, facilitation of maritime trade, and enhancement of national revenue.
“This session provides an important opportunity for the agency to present its 2026 budget proposal and to clearly outline its priorities, strategies, and expected outcomes for the fiscal year.
“As a committee, our responsibility is to ensure that the proposed budget aligns with national priorities, reflects prudent financial management, and delivers measurable value to the Nigerian people. We are particularly interested in how the Agency intends to address key challenges in the sector, including maritime insecurity, capacity development, and institutional efficiency.” She said.

She also said that the committee expects detailed submissions on the following:
• Programmes and projects aimed at strengthening maritime safety and security
• Plans for improving maritime education and human capacity development
• Measures to enhance transparency, accountability, and revenue generation
• Ongoing and proposed capital projects, including their status and expected impact
Distinguished colleagues, the maritime sector remains a critical component of Nigeria’s economic architecture.”

The lawmaker noted that it is imperative that all budgetary allocations are effectively utilised to achieve sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
To the Management of NIMASA, this Committee expects clarity, accountability, and justification for all budgetary provisions. We encourage you to be thorough in your presentation and responsive to the observations and questions that will arise during this exercise.” She said.
The committee chairman, however, assured NIMASA that the committee remains committed to supporting initiatives that will strengthen the maritime sector while also upholding its oversight responsibility in the interest of transparency and national development.
The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, provided the committee with the 2025 budget performance and presented the 2026 budget proposal.
