Reps Mandate FERMA to Resume Maintenance of Abandoned Project

The House of Representatives has mandated the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), to immediately conduct an overview assessment of the abandoned road projects in the country to include the scope of work, date of contract commencement, the amount spent, and stage of work.

This was sequel to the adoption of a motion on “A Need to Complete the Abandoned Ayila–Ayede–Efire Road Spur Ondo State in Ogun Waterside”, moved at plenary by Joseph Adegbesen.

In his lead debate, Adegbesen reminded his fellow lawmakers of several numbers of uncompleted road projects in Nigeria even as he described the situation as alarming, adding that such avoidable situation might impact negatively in the country’s infrastructural development.

The House further observed that uncompleted projects menace is currently preventing Nigerians from receiving benefits from the proceeds of their taxes and national resources.

He thereafter reeled out statistics showing that Nigeria is currently having ovet 56,000 projects worth over twelve trillion naira, abandoned at different locations across the country.

The lawmakers noted with dismay that projects such as that of Ayila–Ayede–Efire Road spur Ondo State in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State was awarded to Reynolds Construction Company Ltd. RCC since 2018.

The house thereafter expressed worry that the project, which was facilitated by former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, was aimed at improving the lives of people in the area after being neglected for over fifteen years by the government.

The House also lamented that the abandoned water side project was impeded and abandoned immediately after the resignation from office of the former minister adding that such had undermined the reflection of true democracy and the agenda of that government.

Consequently, the House called on the Federal Ministry of works to prioritize and ensure that adequate budgetary provision is made in the 2025 budget estimates to comprehensively address the completion of the all abandoned projects across the country.

Lawmakers also mandated its Committees on Works to liaise with relevant agencies to endure compliance and report back within four (4) weeks for further legislative action.
