Nigeian House of Representatives says it will continue to create funds that would address the numerous developmental challenges while improving the nation’s economy.

Speaker House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila stated this in Abuja at a one-day public hearing on a Bill seeking to establish Sustainable Development Goals SDGs fund for Nigeria.

Gbajabiamila stressed the need for the fund to take care of key development needs and said realization of the SDGs priorities by 2030 would make Nigeria achieve even development.

“We have created many funds but none of them is as good as this. To achieve sustainable development goals, there must be funding”, he said.

He called on the stakeholders to ensure that they work out a workable blueprint for sustainable development goals in Nigeria.

Strengthening health system
The Minister of Health Dr. Osagie Ehanire said that sustainable development goals are part of universal health coverage that is envisaged for the nation’s health system.

He further said that the establishment of the sustainable development fund is a welcome development that will help to strengthen the fragile health system.

Sustaining development policies
The Chairman House Committee on SDGs, Mr. Rotimi Ogunsoye said the fund if established, will sustain government’s developmental policies beyond the SDGs 2030 dateline.

He said that adequate legislative measures would be taken in seizing the views canvassed to ensure that sustainable development goals are adequately funded by government

The Sustainable Development Goals SDGs are the 17 goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
