Reps support Judiciary salary increase

The Nigerian House of Representatives says it will continue to take legislative action that would lead to better welfare of Judiciary workers.

The Chairman House Committee on Judiciary, Mr. Onofiok Luke, made the remark during the budget defence session of agencies under the committee.

Mr. Luke, revealed that the committee has already started an advocacy which has been adopted partly by the House for the review of the judiciary workers’ remunerations.

He said: “The committee would also seek the cooperation of relevant agencies to that effect.”

The committee chairman also stressed the need for the establishment of some divisions of Federal Courts in areas that don’t have to make justice accessible to the common man.

Defending the 2022 budget of the National Judicial Council, NJC, the Executive Secretary of the Council, Alh. Gambo Saleh, stated that 120 billion Naira has been budgeted for the 2022 financial year.

The Executive Secretary explained that “Salaries and allowances of Judicial Officers would gulp the sum of 16.8 billion Naira in the 2022 budget proposal.”

Alh. Saleh explained that the economic situation has affected the 2021 budget performance of the Judiciary.
