The Nigerian House of Representatives says it will continue to take action as required to address statutory deficiencies that limit the ability of the nation’s security apparatus to respond effectively to the myriad manifestations of insecurity in Nigeria.
Speaker of the House Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, stated this while addressing members on their resumption from the 2021 annual recess.
Mr. Gbajabiamila said the house will prioritize national security Bills that seek to implement the recommendations of the national security Summit held early in the year.
He revealed that “The House has already begun to take legislative action to implement the Security Summit’s recommendations on statutory reform, amendments and the enactment of new legislation.
Several of such Bills have already passed second reading and now await action in the respective Committees.
This is the time to convene the best efforts to articulate a political, economic, military and policing strategy to address both the manifestations and root causes of the nation’s security threat.”
In a motion under matters of urgent public importance, the House urged the government to redeem its pledge of ten billion Naira to resettle the victims of attacks in Plateau state.
In a motion unanimously adopted on the urgent need to stop the incessant killings in Plateau State, the sponsor Yusuf Gagdi stressed the need for the government to address the problem.
Adopting the motion, the House mandated the ministry of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, NEMA and other relevant agencies to provide relief materials to the victims of attacks in the State and other parts of the country.
