Research Grants: Usmanu Danfodiyo University Honours Lecturer

The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria has awarded the highest grant of the University to Dr. Mohammed Yahaya at the joint conventions in Sokoto.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Lawal Suleiman Bilbis, stated this at a combined 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st Convocations.

On behalf of the Council, Senate, Staff and Students, he said that the award was in recognition of Dr. Yahaya exploits in attracting several multi-million Naira research grants to the university.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the lecturer was among those that attracted a total sum of N1,717,935607 to conduct researches in the areas of peace and national security, infectious diseases and vaccine development, pharmaceuticals and alternative medicine, genomics, food security and nutrition among others.

 

This amount in addition to the one billion Naira grant from TETFUND for the establishment of Centre of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology.

“Currently, the centre has comprehensive surgical procedures with the state of arts equipment for Urethral, postrate, Bladder, Uretic and kidney.

“There are also available in the centre functional equipment for complex inter-sex surgery and kidney transplant surgery.

“The centre is poised to start kidney transplant soon in collaboration with its partners at University of Mansoura Egypt, and University of Alberta Canada,” Professor Bilbis noted.

He said the University is graduating a total of 22,932 who will receive various degrees, higher degrees and diplomas having been found worthy both in Character and learning.

The Vice Chancellor further commended the Nigerian government through the Federal Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education Trust Fund, and the National Universities Commission as well as the governments of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna and Niger States for their investment and pivotal role to the institution.

In his remarks, the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu congratulated the graduands and urged them to be good ambassadors of the institution.

He expressed his administration commitments to partner with the university in the areas of development such as the renewable energy, Security and Education among others.

Governor Aliyu pledged to build a befitting Hostel accommodation for the university.

He said; “I therefore direct the State Ministry of Works and Transport to immediately commence this process so that we can actualise the project in no distant future. Be rest assured that we will continue to do more for this great institution.”

Highlight of the event include; Award of higher and honorary Degrees and of Specials Prizes to best students and some notable personalities who distinguished themselves in the service to humanity.
