The Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, on Monday inaugurated the Benue State 10th House of Assembly.

Addressing the Assembly members on Monday, Fr. Alia charged the new legislators to collaborate with the Executive arm of government in order to deliver the much expected dividends of democracy to the Benue people.

Governor Alia particularly assured the lawmakers of his administration’s support at all times and solicited for constructive engagements and support from the legislative and judicial arms of government to enable them actualize their set goals.

(It would be recalled that Governor Alia on Friday dissolved the 9th Benue Assembly following a dissolution order read by the Clerk of the House, Mr. Bernard Nule, during plenary).

He urged the new legislators to be exemplary in their conduct, stressing that the Benue society has placed so much expectations on them to deliver on their mandate.

He said the legislators not only give a people a voice in affairs of government but also provide the bedrock for the rule of law, equity and justice to reign in the polity.

“Due to the big role the Legislature play side by side with the Judiciary and the Executive arm of government, we are fully prepared to respect the sanctity of the doctrine of the separation of powers under a democracy,” he stressed.

Governor Alia pledged not to meddle in the internal affairs of the legislature, especially in the selection of its leaders even as he reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to meaningfully work closely with those chosen to lead the house.

He advised members to choose from among themselves those whose leadership qualities they would always be proud of just as he pleaded to support the house with the training and retraining of staff and members of the Assembly.

Alia assured that the Executive arm of government will work in harmony with the Legislature and the Judiciary to ensure effective service delivery to the people who are expecting so much from them.

While congratulating the members on their inauguration, he reminded them that they were elected as agents of hope and change and expressed the belief that the lawmakers will always guide their steps in the legislative business, oversight functions and all their actions.

In the meantime, the Clerk of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Bernard Nule, also congratulated both new and old legislative members on their victories and welcomed the new members to the house.
