Rising River Benue State Water Levels Prompt Urgent Evacuation Call
Authorities in Benue State, Central Nigeria, have raised concerns over the rising water levels in the River Benue due to the release of excess water from Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
During a recent inspection of River Benue at the state’s water facilities, the Commissioner for Mr. Odoh Ugwu, Ministry of Water Resources Environment and Climate Change highlighted the potential risks faced by areas like Makurdi, the state capital, and other flood-prone locations.
“Following an alert regarding the release of water from Lagdo Dam, we have been conducting daily checks. The water release is expected to last for seven days, with today being the fifth day.
“This morning, we observed an increase in water level River Benue, reaching 09.57mm”.
The Water Resources Commissioner said, compared to last year’s highest level of 10.20mm, the water level is anticipated to reach 10mm by the end of today.
“In light of this situation, we are urging residents living near river banks to move to higher ground for their safety. Business owners along the river banks should also be aware of the potential danger posed by the rising water levels”.
Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Mr. Aondowase Kunde notes that efforts have been made to prepare for the floods, including identifying and fumigating designated shelters for flood victims.
“These shelters include International Market, Suswam Thank you primary school, NKST Wadata, St. Mary’s Primary school, North Bank, Akume Atongo Stadium Katsina Ala, and RCM Primary school, Agatu”.
According to him, the State Government has also acquired life Jackets and Flying boats to rescue possible victims of the impending disaster just as he assured of compensation for last August victims of flood in the state.
“Communication has been made with the Presidency and relevant authorities regarding the flood situation, and efforts are underway to provide adequate compensation to those affected by the floods”.
The Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Mr. James Iorpuu has also advised residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate immediately to avoid the anticipated flood, which is attributed to the heightened water levels in River Benue resulting from the discharge from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam.
It would be recalled that the recurring flood phenomenon in Benue State has been observed annually since 2012.
