Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Remo Stars had to fight back to earn a point in a 1-1 draw against Rivers United, in the season’s opening match on Friday, at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
In the third minute, Aniekeme Okon’s glancing header from close range off Timothy Zachariah’s cross landed in the net, past a despairing Remo Stars goalkeeper Adebiyi Serge Obassa.

Rivers United’s lead lasted for just six minutes before Victor Mbaoma levelled matters
Mbaoma, who joined up with the Nigerian champions as a free agent for after a season at Rwandan side APR FC, connected well with Samuel Anakwe’s pass to score.

The champions nearly went ahead through Michael Ibe in the 20th minute, but he could only watch as his free kick came off the woodwork.
In added time of first half, Anakwe’s header was beaten out by Rivers United goalkeeper Osagie Onisodumeya as the scores remained 1-1 by halftime.
The second half failed to produce any goal with Rivers United coming close to scoring.
However, the game ended on a dramatic note when Rivers United captain, Temple Emekayi, was sent off in added time after 90 minutes for dangerous play.

The 1-1 draw means Rivers United extends its unbeaten streak in opening matchweek fixtures to 13, since a 1-0 loss at Akwa United in March 2013.
The champions will now prepare for a trip to the Southeast to face newcomers, Kun Khalifat FC, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium next weekend while Rivers United play hosts to Kwara United.
