Rotary Club partners with Ebonyi state on tree planting
The Rotary Club of Abakaliki is partnering with Ebonyi state government on tree planting, designed to promote green environment for the people.
President of the Club, Mr Timothy Nwite, gave this indication in an interview in Abakaliki after the monthly sanitation exercise in the state on Saturday.
Niwite said tree planting was part of efforts to beautify Ebonyi and boost its green economy.
He noted that tree planting was not only for environmental protection, but also for the economic emancipation of the state.
“We embarked on this programme to protect our environment. Most of the trees are economic trees, and these can be strong sources of revenue to individuals, families and the nation,” Nwite added.
The club President urged the citizens to support the programme and ensure that they plant a tree in order to protect the soil.
Mr Victor Chukwu, Ebonyi State Commissioner for Environment, commended the Rotary Club and described the tree planting exercise as a welcome development.
Chukwu pledged that the exercise would be a continuous one and urged the people to stay away from uprooting any of the planted trees.
“Delighted over the move, I urge them to keep the flag flying by ensuring that the environment is properly protected,” the Commissioner said.
