Mohamed Salah Leads Goal Scoring in World Cup Qualifiers.

Prolific Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been a dominant force in the African World Cup qualifiers, topping the goal charts with six goals as he pushes Egypt toward qualification.

The 32-year-old Egyptian star started the campaign in spectacular fashion, netting four goals in a 6-0 demolition of Djibouti on matchday one in Cairo. He later added goals in away fixtures against Guinea-Bissau and Ethiopia, further cementing his place at the top of the scoring table.

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg striker Mohamed Amoura made headlines with a matchday six hat-trick for Algeria in a 5-1 thrashing of Mozambique in Tizi Ouzou. Amoura now shares second place on five goals with five other players.

Group C: The Shock Group of African World Cup Qualifiers

Group C—featuring South Africa, Rwanda, Benin, Nigeria, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe—has delivered some of the biggest surprises in the African qualifiers.

  • Lesotho stunned Nigeria by forcing a 1-1 draw in Uyo.
  • Rwanda capitalized on a rain-soaked pitch to defeat South Africa in a shock result.
  • Benin came from behind to secure a dramatic win over Nigeria.
  • Zimbabwe’s Wolverhampton Wanderers winger, Tawanda Chirewa, scored in added time to grab a 1-1 draw in Nigeria.

These unexpected results have turned Group C into one of the most unpredictable groups, making qualification wide open.

Most Common Scorelines in African Qualifiers

A 1-0 victory has been the most frequent scoreline in the qualifiers, occurring 33 times in 151 matches. Other common results include:

  • 2-1 and 2-0 wins (21 times each).
  • 1-1 draws (19 times).
  •  0-0 stalemate (15 times)

Lopsided victories have been rare, with just:

  • Three 5-0 results.
  • Two 6-0 wins.
  • Two 5-1 scorelines.

The most dominant performance so far came from reigning African champions Ivory Coast, who crushed Seychelles 9-0.

Top Seeds Justifying Their Status

With four matchdays remaining—two in September and two in October—the top-seeded teams have mostly lived up to expectations:

  • Egypt, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Algeria, and Tunisia are all leading their groups.
  • Cameroon and Senegal currently occupy second place, trailing Cape Verde and DR Congo by just one point.
  • Mali and Nigeria, however, have struggled, sitting fourth in their groups, six points behind leaders Ghana and South Africa.

Morocco: The Only Team With a Perfect Record

2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco are the only nation among the 52 teams in African qualifiers boasting a 100% winning record.

The Atlas Lions have secured five consecutive victories, defeating:

  • Tanzania (twice) 2-0.
  • Zambia 2-1.
  • Congo Brazzaville 6-0.
  • Niger 2-1.

Morocco benefited from hosting their “away” fixtures against Congo Brazzaville and Niger, as both nations lacked FIFA-approved stadiums for home matches.

Looking Ahead: Can Salah Maintain His Lead?

With four matchdays remaining, all eyes will be on Mohamed Salah and Egypt as they aim to secure qualification for the FIFA World Cup. Meanwhile, Group C remains unpredictable, and Morocco will look to maintain their perfect record.
