The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has debunked the reports making the rounds on social media that the governorship candidate of the party in Rivers state, southern Nigeria, Mr. Magnus Abe, and the local government executive members have defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement signed by the SDP National Secretary Mr Rufus Aiyenigba the party described the news as false and misleading.
“The attention of the public has been drawn to a false and misleading report in a video that is making the rounds on social media to the effect that some state and local government officers of our party in Rivers state have defected to the ruling PDP and visited Governor Nyesome Wike on Saturday March 11, 2023,” the statement partly read.
The national secretary of the party added that Magnus Abe, the SDP’s gubernatorial candidate in the state; Rivers people and the general public know the purported defection and endorsement by the unknown faces, who claim to be SDP officers in Rivers state, is untrue and should be disregarded.
The SDP, therefore, called on the people of Rivers state and its electorate to support the candidates of the party in the governorship and House of Assembly elections coming up on Saturday, March 18, 2023.
