Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to demolish all abandoned buildings harboring criminals in the FCT to keep Abuja safe.
He stated this on Friday during a town hall meeting on security challenges in Gwagwalada Area Council.
He noted that some of the abandoned buildings would be taken away from the owners who abandon them and give to others who would build.
Wike, who addressed the gathering in pidgin English, disclosed that the President has directed him to visit the six Area Councils and resolve the lingering insecurity challenges in the Territory.
“Our job is to protect lives, if we do not do that, there will be no need to be in government.
“All these criminals should know that their time has reached.”
Wike, while promising to provide security agencies in FCT with vehicles and others tools to work, stated that the residents should also play their part, because security was a collective responsibility.
“But we need to do our part. Security alone cannot do the work. Give them (security agencies) information to prevent and fight insecurity in FCT”, he said.
Speaking against payment of ransoms to kidnappers, the Minister stated that the practice would only encourage the criminals to do more, and urged the residents not to give money to criminals anymore.
Speaking earlier, Chairma of Gwagwalada Area Council, Abubakar Jibrin Giri, noted that though the council did not have many security issues throughout last year, the council was in dire need of at least two more Police Divisions, one in Giri town and the other at the border between FCT and Niger State.
He therefore requested approval from the Minister to demolish abandoned projects in his council, saying they were shielding criminals.
On his part, the Agoma of Gwagwalada, HRH Abdullahi Magaji requested for the dualization of the road leading to the Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada.
