Senate Committee Presents Legislative Agenda to Army Chief

The Senate Committee on Army has presented its ‘Legislative Agenda’ for the army to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), with a view to ensuring a harmonious working relationship between the army and the committee.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Mr. Abdulaziz Musa Yar’adua made the presentation when he led members of the committee on its maiden visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

Senator Yar’adua used the opportunity to commend the Nigerian army’s effort in curtailing the security challenges in the country while assuring the Chief and his men that they will ensure that all the tools needed to carry out assigned tasks effectively are made available to the personnel through its legislation.

During the meeting with the Chief of Army Staff and Principal Staff Officers of the Nigerian Army, Senator Yar’adua pointed out that the visit by the committee was mainly to present the senate’s ‘Legislative Agenda’ for the army to the Chief of Army Staff.

The Legislative agenda handed over to Chief of Army Staff contains a blueprint of what the committee intends to achieve through its allocated tenure as Senate Committee on Army.

The Senate Committee Chairman therefore pledged to ensure that the Nigerian army gets the needed funding to enable it succeed in all its operations and activities and to improved welfare for personnel.

He further stated that the visit afforded them the opportunity to have insight into the operational engagements of the army and its needs.

“I want to assure the Chief of Army Staff that all the challenges that have been highlighted in this interactive session, the committee will make sure we do our best. I also assure you that we will give you total cooperation and support to ensure that these challenges are surmounted.

“We will synergise and ensure that whatever is required by the army is provided to ensure the safety of lives of Nigerians and Nigeria,” stated the Committee Chairman.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS,) Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja while welcoming members of the Committee said the Nigerian Army recognises the critical role of the Committee, while expressing appreciation for the warm support that the Nigerian Army has received since the inauguration of the house.

General Lagbaja pledged that the Nigerian Army will continue to work with the committee as the effectiveness of the Nigerian Army depends on adequate appropriation by the legislature which is critical to all its operations.

“I want to start by appreciating this distinguished senate committee for the critical role you play in the effective functioning of the Nigerian Army, we recognise the critical role of the legislature in the effective functioning of the military, and the committee is critical to the performance of constitutional responsibility as an army.”

The COAS therefore assured the Senate Committee that the Nigerian army will continue to conduct operations in the field to combat the myriads of security challenges that confront the country.
