Senate President decries rivalry between Governors, predecessor

President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday lamented that Governors in Nigeria always fight their predecessor immediately they resume office.

Senator Akpabio who spoke at the 60th birthday anniversary lecture and book presentation of Senate leader, Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele in Abuja, applauded the celebrant for his loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for over 30 years when he served as aide to him in National Assembly in 1992.

Expressing displeasure with the attitude of governors to their predecessors, Senator Akpabio said there is no former governor that has not had issues with his successor citing issue of Senator Adams Oshiomole, Senator Adamu Aliero among others.

The President of the Senate praised the governor of Ekiti state, for remaining steadfast and not engaging with his predecessor.

“The Governor of Ekiti state is a great example of what leadership should be, he has remained steadfast.

“As a Governor, the moment you hand over power to your successor, he will turn on you, either his taste will change or attitude,” Akpabio stated.

Ministers’ List In 48 Hours

Meanwhile, the Senate leader has disclosed that the much-expected list of Minister nominees will be received by the Senate in the next 48 hours.

Senator Bamidele said that President Tinubu told him on Tuesday morning when he called to greet “me for my birthday this morning around 10:03 am that he will not be able to come to the birthday lecture because he needed to submit to Senate in the next 49 hours.”

Speaking at the event, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Toyin Ogundipe disclosed that Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) have no business in the convoy of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima once the Police is in the convoy.

The former Vice Chancellor who delivered lecture at the 60th birthday anniversary lecture said that there was the need for political office holders to reduce number of vehicles in their convoy to show to Nigerians that “you feel their pains in this season.”

According to Professor Ogundipe, “There is need for our leaders to reduce the number of vehicles in their convey so that Nigerians will know that you feel their pains.”

“There is nothing VIO, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) are doing in the entourage of President and Vice President once you have police in the convoy.”

Professor Ogundipe also urged political Leaders to change the narrative on the issue of insecurity in Nigeria.
