The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Ahmed Lawan says, the ninth assembly has passed the most groundbreaking legislations in Africa.

The bills according to him includes the Petroleum Industry Bill, Company and Allied Matters Act as well as deep off-shore Act among others.

He made the disclosure while declaring the Second Edition of the Distinguished Parliamentarians Lecture Series organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), in Abuja.

The Senate President described the legislature as the most misunderstood arm of government, especially by the common man.

“It is important to understand that no matter what we do, we will continue to be misunderstood. We will continue with this series to enlighten the people”, Senator Lawan said.

He appreciated Nigerians for keeping faith with the national assembly noting that even in its final days, it would continue to make laws.

The Chairman of the session and the Governor of Kaduna state, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, commended the ninth assembly for passing landmark legislations.

He said that legislators hold the key to the success of Nigeria’s democracy.

He also advised the National Assembly to enact a legislation that would make the first 12 years of education free and compulsory in Nigeria.

“This National Assembly has the capacity to enact community policing law to give power to states to establish state police. It will be helpful if the national assembly makes the first twelve years of education free for all. Reform the local government system and make it autonomous”, Elrufai said.

According to the Kaduna state governor, there is also an urgent need for the National Assembly to enact a state and community policing system and also reform the nation’s tax system.
