The Nigerian Senate has called for the provision of more industrial incentives and protections like concessionary loans and larger tax relief for prospective cement manufacturers.

According to the Senate, such incentives would boost production of cement, reduce price and encourage more valuable producers in Nigeria.

These were part of the resolutions reached on Tuesday following the consideration of a motion on the need to liberalize cement policy in Nigeria. The motion was sponsored by Senator Ashiru Yisa and five others.

Majority of the Senators who supported the motion, argued that the move became necessary because of the strategic importance of cement to Nigeria’s infrastructure development.

Also on Tuesday, Senate considered and passed three bills for second reading including one seeking to establish the national livestock protection, control and management Bureau.

The others are the bills to establish the critical infrastructure protection, coordination committee and the critical infrastructure protection task force and the integrated data management commission.

All the bills that were read for the second time were referred to their relevant committees for further legislative input with a mandate to report back to Senate in plenary within four weeks.
