Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party has defeated the incumbent Governor Adeboyega Oyetola in the election held on Saturday.

The Returning Officer, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe who is also the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos returned Adeleke, having scored the required number of votes and in fulfillment of the extant laws.

He made the declaration in Osogbo on Sunday morning.

The PDP candidate won in 17 out of thirty Local Governments Areas with  403,371 votes to defeat APC’s Oyetola who won in 13 LGAs with 375,027 votes.

Action Democratic Party came distant third  with 10,104.

Speaking at the Collation Center at the ÍNEC, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof AbdulGaniyy Raji thanked residents of Osun state for living up to their billing by conducting themselves in peaceful manner.

He noted that the achievement of Osun superceded the much celebrated feat at Ekiti, promising on behalf of ÍNEC to improve on their performance in subsequent elections.

The Commissioner expressed happiness that the exercise was not only free, fair and credible as promised, it was also inclusive as it further integrated People Living with Disabilities, the youth and women.

Adeleke’s agent, Bamidele Salaam described the victory as a sweet one and a victory for democracy. He commended the ÍNEC, its officials and the security personnel for their objectivity.

He however appealed to all the defeated political parties to collaborate with Senator Adeleke to move the State of Osun to the next level.

Free & Fair Election
The election, which has been described by many stakeholders as peaceful, free, fair and credible, was characterised by early arrival of electoral staff and voting materials, optimal functioning of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, and large turn out of voters.

The Independent National Electoral Commission and the security agents have been commended for embracing professionalism in their dealings.

The deployment of the Bimodal Voter Acceditation System machine with its efficiency have equally been adjudged a positive development.

Vote trading curbed
Unlike in previous elections, vote trading in the open was absent in Osun election. Perhaps, massive sensitisation of voters which preceded the poll and the physical presence of personnel of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) contributed to the development.

The turn out of voters was not only impressive, the electorates also conducted themselves very well with no major violence or single fatality. Massive deployment of security agents, including the officials of National Drugs Law Enforcement Agents may not be unconnected to this as well.

Fifteen political parties contested the Osun governorship election in 332 wards with 3,763 Polling Units. The state had a total of 1,955,657 registered voters with 1,479,596 of them being eligible to vote.
