Senator Frank Ibezim, a former senator representing Imo North Senatorial District, has urged the Nigerian government to sustain and expand policies that foster resources and inclusion for children with autism across the country during an autism awareness campaign organised by Be Kind by Toby, held in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Be Kind by Toby is an autism awareness initiative founded by Tobechi Achionye, an autistic creative who employs art, music, and fashion to advocate for greater awareness and inclusion for individuals with autism.

In his address,Senator Ibezim encouraged parents to support their children with autism through education and understanding.

According to him, “Families are the first and most important support system for any child. Parents should fully engage and learn about autism, connect with support networks, and never stop advocating.

“Today, we’ve come together not only to celebrate artistic brilliance but to honour a young man whose life and work are shining beacons of kindness, courage, and creativity—Tobechi Achionye, whom we all lovingly call Toby,” Ibezim stated.

Senator Ibezim highlighted Toby’s achievements, showcasing how they have transformed perceptions of autism and diversity.

“Toby’s journey is a powerful testimony of resilience and the limitless possibilities that lie within each of us.

“Diagnosed with autism at the age of four, he faced many early challenges, but through unwavering love and belief, especially from his parents, Toby found a way to turn those challenges into strengths,” he said.

Ibezim called for sponsorship to support Toby in funding, translating, and distributing his books, powering awareness campaigns, and continuing his artistic and educational endeavours.

Mrs Noni Okocha, Manager of the convener, stressed the importance of Toby’s work in supporting children with autism.

She remarked on the potential within every child, regardless of their challenges, stating that there is ability in disabilities.

She urged further collaboration and awareness to create a more supportive environment for children with autism and their families.

“Toby’s dream is bold, and it is necessary. He wants his message to reach every child, in every language, in every part of the world,” she said.

Tobechi Achionye expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support received and acknowledged the collective efforts towards fostering a nurturing environment for autistic children.

The event’s highlight included a musical performance by Tobechi Achionye, alongside an exhibition of his artworks, fashion designs, and books.

He also demonstrated his talent by swiftly sketching a media logo for the participants.
