The Secretary to the Federal Government of Nigeria, Senator George Akume, has urged Nigerians to not lose hope with the current challenges facing the Country, and expect good policies for economic development from the present administration.
Senator Akume made the disclosure at the 2024 fourth-quarter meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council NIREC with the theme “Our National Resources and Insecurity in Nigeria.”
He added that Nigeria is rich in natural resources, including Oil, Gas, and Solid minerals. However, the country is facing insecurity challenges that have negative impact on the economy and development.
“Let us reflect on the critical importance of sustainable management of our natural resources, Nigeria is rich in natural resources including crude oil, natural gas, and Solid minerals. However this is also facing insecurity challenges that Impact.
“The Continuous depletion of these resources not only threaten our environment but also exacerbate social and economic insecurities in the country,” the SGF added.
In his remark, the Executive Secretary of Nigeria Inter-Religious Council NIREC Professor Cornelius Afebu said security challenges could be addressed through a non-kinetic approach and called on Nigerians to always contribute to the development of the country.
“Unfortunately, the natural resources we have instead of being a blessing to the nation has been a source of pain that is caused by various forms of insecurity.”
Similarly, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN Archbishop Daniel Okoh, noted that it’s imperative to use their positions as religious leaders to address the level of weakness that manifests in the lack of transparency, accountability, and impunity of Nigeria’s commonwealth.
“The resulting insecurity has had devastating effects on our social fabrics resulting to displacements, loss of lives and a pervasive sense of fear amongst our citizens.
“We the religious leaders have a unique and vital role to play in addressing these issues. Our faith teaches us the value of stewardship, sanctity of human lives, compassion and justice.
“We are called to be the voice of the voiceless , to advocate for equitable resource distribution and to promote peace and reconciliation among all.”
In his word of appreciation, the President General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs NSCIA, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar commended the Office of the Secretary to the government of the Federation with all the necessary support given to the council in all its activities of addressing the challenges bedeviling the country through the religious approach.
The meeting aims to promote peaceful co-existence in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation.
