The Society of Occupational and Environmental Health Physicians of Nigeria (SOEHPON), has restated its commitment to safeguarding workers’ health and improving productivity across workplaces nationwide.
SOEHPON President, Dr. Musa Shaibu made this known at a press briefing in Lagos to kick-start activities for the Society’s 2025 Annual International Scientific Conference, Exhibitions and AGM.
He urged regulators, industry leaders, international partners and other stakeholders to work collectively toward safer and more sustainable work environments.
Dr. Shaibu commended the media for its consistent support in promoting occupational safety and workers’ welfare, noting that ‘heightened press engagement has boosted the Society’s visibility and strengthened national advocacy on workplace safety.”
He stressed the need for deeper collaboration, especially as Nigeria’s workplaces face increasing pressures from industrial risks, climate change, automation, new chemical exposures and recurring disease outbreaks.
According to him, this year’s conference themed: “Advancing the Practice of Occupational and Environmental Health in Nigeria” will play a key role in strengthening regulations, enhancing collaboration and influencing policy direction in the sector.
He highlighted three strategic areas of focus for the conference;
- Use of Data in OEH Practice to support evidence-based risk assessment and workplace surveillance.
- Sustainable OEH Practices for National Development, underscoring the link between safe workplaces and long-term economic growth.
- Research and Audit in OEH Practice, aimed at improving accountability, standardisation and policy implementation.

Dr. Shaibu said, “The expected outcomes include improved workplace safety standards, stronger employer–employee cooperation, better incident-prevention systems and wider public awareness of Occupational and Environmental Health as a driver of national productivity.”
The conference is scheduled for December 1–4, 2025, at Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, with participants and experts from the global occupational health community.
Other SOEHPON leaders including the Scientific Sub-Committee Chairman, Dr. Anyanate Ephraim; National Vice President, Dr. Lanre Ajayi; National PRO, Dr. Charles Babajide Onigbogi; and the Society’s Admin Head, Mrs. Adetutu Omoba also appealed for stronger media collaboration to raise public awareness on the importance of Occupational and Environmental Health.
Founded in 1978, SOEHPON serves as the umbrella body for Occupational Health Practitioners across various sectors in Nigeria and abroad.
The organisation advances OEH practice through advocacy, capacity development, global partnerships and stakeholder engagement.
