Sokoto: NAF Reaffirms Commitment to Consolidate Security Gains

The Commander, 119 Composite Unit of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Sokoto Command, Group Captain Umar Salihu Maibuhu, has affirmed the unit’s commitment to building upon its 2024 successes in combating national insecurity.

Group Captain Maibuhu stated this at the annual Base Sociocultural Activities (BASA) organised by the command in the Mana Area, Sokoto State.

He said the celebration was an event usually organised by the end of the year for Airmen, Airwomen, and their families as well as neighboring civilians.

“BASA is a age-long tradition in the Nigerian Air Force traceable from the pre-independence period.

“The tradition is part of the Nigerian Air Force ethics, usually organised to enable airmen, airwomen, their families, and their civilian friends to interact through displays of various cultural activities in a conducive atmosphere. It further promotes comradeship, deepens esprit de corps, and deepens unity among personnel and barracks community,” Group Captain Maibuhu said.

According to him, there was remarkable improvement in the operations along the axis that enabled the Airforce to neutralised many criminals terrorising the northern part of the country.

He applauded the airmen and airwomen’s high standards of professionalism and discipline displayed last year in the discharge of their mandate.

Group Captain Maibuhu further assured the personnel of more welfare and other interventions that would continue to boost their morale in the field.

He appreciated the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Bala Hassan, for his unwavering and continuous support to the command at all times.

Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, who was also the special guest of honour, said the Nigerian Airforce had made numerous positive sacrifices in keeping the country together, as symbolised by BASA annual event, which showcased different cultural and historical heritage of Nigeria.

Governor Aliyu, represented by the Special Adviser on Security Matters, Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd), described the celebration as an avenue that fosters unity, harmony, and brotherhood within the command and Nigeria’s environment.

He expressed confidence that the Nigerian Armed Forces remained the fulcrum and strategic institution capable of making Nigeria secure.

“The state government is saluting the Air Force and their families for the resilience and sacrifices.

“We will continue to support you for sustained operations in defense of the country’s sovereignty as well as providing more security to the state,” he added.

He commended the commander of the 119th composite unit for organizing the annual event and giving him the opportunity to be a special guest of honour.

The highlights of the BASA Sociocultural Activities were presentations of awards to personalities, the best Airman and Airwoman, who distinguished themselves while discharging their duties in the year 2024.

There was also a tug of war between the Magajiya Team and the Airwomen Team, where the Magajiyas emerged as winners, and there was a cultural display by different ethnic groups and a drama presentation, among others.
