Sokoto Police Command Reads Riot Act To Political Parties Ahead Elections

The Sokoto State Police Command through the Inter Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, ICCES has read the riot act to political party leaders and their followers.

Addressing the leaders, the chairman of the committee and State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Usseni Gumel said that the decision to hold the meeting came after the decision of ICCES in the state to collectively address the disturbing trend surrounding campaign activities.

Gumel said the meeting was to review the ongoing political campaign activities characterized by the exchange of vulgar statements by political opponents and exhibition of hard drugs-related violence in some parts of the state.

the meeting was also to sensitize the campaign organizers and offer them the chance to reflect and address the emerging concerns and also remind them of their roles as political parties in checkmating mischievous followers” he said.

He explained that during the meeting all party leaders agreed to form committees charged with the screening of supporters to ensure that no one carries any weapon during campaigns.

In a statement by the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sanusi Abubakar, the Commissioner further stated that the leaders had agreed that their campaigns would be devoid of non-state security actors, quasi-security outfits and other non-State actors.

The Police Commissioner assured the political parties of the police readiness in conjunction with the Independent National Electoral Commission Legal teams to deal with violators of the electoral act.
