The National Universities Commission NUC has approved the upgrade of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, to a University of Education.
The Commission said with the approval, the new institution becomes the first University of Education in northern Nigeria.
Presenting the approval letter to the Governor of Sokoto State, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, said the Shehu Shagari University of Education is now fully recognized as the 58th State University and 206th in the country, having met all the requirements.
He said with the approval, the National Youth Service Corps NYSC, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board JAMB and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund TETFund would accord the university necessary recognition.
