The Sokoto State Government has flagged off the distribution and sale of 100 metric tonnes of fertilizers to farmers in the state for the 2022 farming season.

Governor of the state, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, during the ceremony pegged the product at N13,000 against its N29,000 market price, and warned against thwarting the Government ’s effort by selling the fertilizers to marketers.

Tambuwal noted that 80 per cent of people that are resident in the state are farmers, pointing out that Sokoto has a comparative advantage of producing some crops because of its weather.

The Governor, further, informed that his administration has secured a N4 billion Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) intervention facility for 16,000 rice and tomato farmers in the state.

Tambuwal said his agricultural policy is yielding results, listing the establishment of Dangote Rice Mill and Morocco Fertilizer blending plant at Kware and Kalambaina respectively, as some of the achievements.

Also, the Governor urged civil servants and other categories of workers in the state to diversify their income by embracing agriculture, saying the state government would assist anybody who ventures into farming with subsidized inputs.

On security matters, Tambuwal explained that the government is working with security agencies in the state to stem the tide of insecurity in rural areas, especially in the Eastern senatorial district, to enable farmers return to their farms.

On his part, the state’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Professor Aminu Abubakar Illela, noted that appropriate measures were in place to prevent diversion of the fertilizers, affirming that the product would reach real farmers in the state.
