Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of Nigerian servicemen and women, praising their role in safeguarding national peace, unity and security.
The governor spoke on Sunday at a solemn thanksgiving Mass held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka, to mark the commencement of activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The annual observance, marked nationwide on January 15, honours members of the Nigerian Armed Forces who died in active service, as well as those still serving the country at home and in international peacekeeping missions.
Addressing the congregation, Governor Soludo reaffirmed his administration’s support for the military and commended the courage, professionalism and selflessness of Nigeria’s armed forces.
This occasion is aimed at fostering unity and strengthening national security,” he said. “It is also a profound reminder of the sacrifices made by our fallen heroes, who paid the ultimate price in service to their fatherland. We must honour their memory by promoting peace, unity and patriotism.”
The service, attended by military personnel, government officials and residents of Awka, highlighted the contributions of Nigerian soldiers who fought in the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian civil war, and those who have participated in peace support operations around the world. The day also recognises living veterans and families who have endured hardship as a result of war.

In his homily, the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, described Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a solemn occasion dedicated to honouring lives laid down in service to the nation. Drawing parallels between baptism and remembrance, he said both symbolise sacrifice and the preservation of life.
The bishop urged Nigerians to resist selfish interests and instead work for the common good, stressing that national unity and peace depend on collective responsibility. He also offered prayers for the safety of serving military personnel and other security operatives, as well as for their families, asking God to grant them strength and protection in the discharge of their duties.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day remains one of Nigeria’s most significant national observances, celebrating both the fallen and the living heroes whose sacrifices continue to shape the country’s peace and security.
