Somalia resumes diplomatic ties with Kenya
Somalia on Thursday announced in a tweet that it has restored diplomatic ties with Kenya.
Director of Communications of The Somali Presidency, Abdirashid M. Hashi said:
“In interest of good neighbourliness, FGS resumes Diplomatic ties with Kenya based on mutual benefit and respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-external interference, peaceful co-existence & equality.
“Somalia and Kenya Presidents thank Emir of Qatar for his good offices in this regard.”
The Qatar Special Envoy for Counterterrorism & Mediation of Conflict Resolution, Dr Mutlaq bin Majed Al-Qahtani, is currently in Kenya for talks with Uhuru Kenyatta after concluding a weeklong trip to Somalia.
While in Mogadishu, he met with federal, regional leaders & opposition politicians.
Somalia had cut ties with Kenya in December 2020, and ordered its ambassador to return home while Kenya’s Lucas Tumbo also returned to Nairobi.
The government of Somalia earlier said it severed diplomatic ties with Kenya was in response to what it described as “Kenyan interference and violations of their sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
