South Sudan Flooding Affected Up to 90,000 Individuals – UN
Thousands of individuals and major regions have been affected by flooding in South Sudan.
“Up to 90,000 individuals have been affected by the flooding in South Sudan’s eastern state, Jonglei” The UN humanitarian affairs agency says.
According to the BBC, Local authorities tell the UN that Over 70,000 people in the Ayod and Canal provinces were unfortunate, as this was the second time, they were experiencing such a situation since May.
It also stated that the affected areas are in need of humanitarian support, as thousands now seek refuge on islands, under tress and unable to reach safety.
Intense rainfall has resulted in the destruction of homes and agricultural fields, pressuring families and livestock to find safety on higher ground.
“What is occurring in Ayod is a distressing example of how a changing climate disrupts the normal patterns and intensifies the effects of flooding, leaving people disoriented and dispossessed,” said Arafat Jamal, the acting Ocha coordinator in South Sudan.
He further called for urgent food assistance, shelter, kitchen items, medicines and access to clean water.
