Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has saluted the Super Falcons of Nigeria for qualifying for the women’s football event of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, after edging Banyana Banyana South Africa over two legs.

It would be recalled that Nigeria beat South Africa 1-0 in the first leg of the Olympic Games qualifiers, before both sides played out a goalless draw in the second leg as Nigeria progressed after winning 1-0 on aggregate.

The Minister commended the team for their bold, energetic and tireless performance that earned them a goalless draw in Pretoria and a 1-0 aggregate win following the victory in Abuja last week.

Tuesday’s result in Pretoria means that  Nigeria broke the 16-year jinx of absence from the Olympics since Beijing 2008, securing qualification against their rivals.

Senator Enoh expressed immense pride in the Super Falcons’ achievement, emphasising that their performance deserved nothing short of the ticket to Paris.

“Today, we salute the Super Falcons for their extraordinary display of tenacity and doggedness, breaking barriers and reclaiming Nigeria’s spot on the Olympic stage,” Enoh said.

“Their victory is not just a triumph for Nigerian football but a testament to the power of dedication and teamwork. As we look forward to Paris 2024, let us rally behind our champions and support them as they strive for greatness.”

The Sports Minister extended his felicitations to the coaching staff, players and all Nigerians, stating it is a win for the country. He added that all hands must be on deck, as they prepare to represent Nigeria with pride and determination at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
