Spotify celebrates Nigerian Fuji Afrobeats history

Spotify has unveiled three new playlists to highlight Nigeria’s musical diversity on the occasion of the country’s 62nd Independence anniversary.

This was made know in a statement on Friday, the streaming platform said the playlists “provide a home for music that millions provide a home for music that millions of Nigerians of Nigerians, of all ages and persuasions, have loved and listened to for decades”.

According to Spotify, the initiative is aimed at spotlighting the heroics of Nigerian artistes in the global music landscape and appreciating those who made it possible.

“Aside from the global growth of Afrobeats, Nigeria is also home to a diverse musical culture, with genres of unique origins, and artists who have created iconic music across eras,” it reads.

“To highlight this, Spotify is giving a voice to some of Nigerian music’s unsung genres, its most essential decades, as well as the creators and hit songs that laid foundations for Afrobeats’ success.”

The playlists are in three sections namely the ‘sound of Fuji’, ‘I love my 2000s Afrobeats’ and ‘I love my 2010s Afrobeats’.

The sound of the Fuji playlist charts the evolution of the Fuji genre and it is most essential artistes from Kollington Ayinla to Wasiu Alabi Pasuma. Check out the playlist.

The second category examines the Afrobeats hit songs that defined the early 2000s. You can find the list.
