“Squid Game” Creator Confirms Second Season

 The renewal of a second series of squid game has been confirmed by the creator and director, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, this confirmation comes after the record success of the Netflix, South Korean show.

 

It is reported that more than 100 million people around the world watched Squid Game in its first month. It has now been officially confirmed that the Netflix hit will have a second series, this is notably not always common for South Korean shows.

 

The South Korean show was a huge hit on its streaming platform, Netflix, it is known to be Netflix’s largest ever launch.

 

Most shows in South Korea run for only a single series, but Hwang Dong-hyuk has said that due to the reaction, “I almost feel like you leave us no choice”. 

 

Mr Hwang said: “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season.

 

“It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen.

 

 “So I will promise you this, Gi-hun will be back and he’ll do something for the world.”

 

The series is set in South Korea and revolves around people who are heavily in debt invited to play a series of challenges which could see them take home 45.6bn won (around £28m).

 

The contestants have to beat 455 other people to win the money while playing children’s games such as Red Light, Green Light, but the twist is if you lose, you die.

 

It premiered in September and was part of efforts by Netflix to show more international programmes. Since the unexpected success, those who starred in the show have gained huge celebrity.

 

Jung Ho-yeon, a model and actor, was used to travelling, but when she landed in LA this time a border guard asked for her signature. Lee Jung-jae, who plays lead character Seong Gi-Hun, has been working in South Korea for 25 years.Now he is being recognised on the streets of the US.

 

He said: “That’s amazing, right? People just go around and say hello.

 

“So I really don’t know how to respond to all the love. It’s so great to be able to meet the fans who have loved and watched the show so much.”
