Eminent leaders and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have set out key conditions they consider essential for ensuring that the party’s forthcoming National Convention is credible, inclusive, and legally binding.

Following a strategic meeting in Abuja, the leaders reiterated their commitment to equity, justice, inclusivity, and the rule of law, principles they described as the foundation of the PDP and critical to its continued relevance as a strong opposition party.

They warned that the party stands at a critical crossroads where fairness, reconciliation, and respect for constitutional processes will determine its relevance in Nigeria’s political future.

The stakeholders called on the National Working Committee (NWC) to conduct fresh, transparent, and inclusive congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra States in line with existing court rulings. They also demanded a legitimate South-East Zonal Congress and urged the party to respect the outcome of the South-South Congress held in Calabar, Cross River State, which has already been recognised by the court.

In addition, they insisted that the pending Local Government Areas Congress in Ekiti State be conducted immediately, in obedience to the court’s judgment.

On zoning, they stressed that while they agree with the zoning committee’s recommendations adopted by the NEC, there should be no form of micro-zoning. They further maintained that the office of National Chairman must remain in the North-Central, in line with the 2021 convention formula.

They cautioned that failure to implement these resolutions would render the National Convention invalid, as legitimate members of the party would be disenfranchised.

The leaders urged the party to rise above narrow interests, warning that unity cannot be achieved through exclusion or disregard for judicial pronouncements.

“The PDP must now rise above narrow interests and embrace collective responsibility. Only then can the party speak with one voice, act with one heart, and march with renewed strength toward victory,” they declared.

The meeting was attended by top-ranking party members, including the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike; PDP National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu; National Vice Chairman (South-South), Dan Orbih; former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu; former Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; and former Senator George Sekibo, alongside several zonal and state chairmen.
