Starlink, a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, has entered into an agreement with Kyivstar, Ukraine’s leading mobile operator, to introduce direct-to-cell satellite connectivity in Ukraine.

This innovative technology enables standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites functioning as mobile towers, ensuring continuous communication even when traditional terrestrial networks are compromised.

Kyivstar plans to initiate messaging services using this technology by the fourth quarter of 2025, with subsequent expansions to include voice and data services.

Ukraine is set to become one of the first nations globally to deploy direct-to-cell connectivity and, notably, the first conflict zone to implement this technology.

This development has taken place amid ongoing efforts by Russia to disrupt Starlink signals in Ukraine since 2022.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining satellite support for Ukraine, emphasising the strategic importance of resilient communication infrastructure in the region.
