SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service is now available in Somalia, company owner Elon Musk announced Sunday on social media platform X.

A Somali government official confirmed the development, stating that the company has officially been granted a licence to operate in the country.

“We have been in talks with this company (Starlink) for a period of two and a half years. We gave them the licence today,” said Mustafa Yasiin, director of communication at the Ministry of Telecommunications, in a video posted by the state news agency SONNA on Facebook.

Yasiin expressed hope that Starlink’s entry into the market will enhance the quality of existing internet services and expand access to remote and underserved areas across Somalia.
