The National Economic Council says the decision on the establishment of State Police across Nigeria will be made at the next meeting

The Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye Diri who disclosed this to Journalists at the end of this month’s meeting of the Council, presided by Vice President Kashim Shettima revealed that 33 States have so far made their positions known on the establishment of State Police.

He said: “Council was updated with the submission on the establishment of State Police and it was reported that 33 States have submitted their positions while three States are yet to do so.”

Governor Diri disclosed that Adamawa, Kebbi and Kwara States are yet to make their stand known and the council gave them one week to do so, to enable the council take a decision on the matter at its next meeting.

“These three States are Adamawa, Kebbi and incidentally Kwara, which is the State of the Chairman of our Forum (Governors’ Forum). The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is also yet to submit its position.

“The Council mandated these remaining States and the FCT to make their submissions within the next one week. The Council further resolved to present a consolidated States’ position on State Police at our next meeting,” he added.

The issue of State Police has been debated at various levels in Nigeria, with a view to addressing security challenges in some parts of the country.
