STEP: NGO empowers youths with digital skills
United Way Greater Nigeria (UWGN), a non-governmental organization (NGO), has collaborated with Rack Centre to empower 150 youths from diverse communities across Lagos State, imparting essential digital skills through the Skill To Employment Programme (STEP).
According to the organisers, the graduation ceremony marked a significant milestone in the lives of the youths drawn from Ojota, Oregun, Ikeja, and Ogudu, who completed an intensive eight-week training in graphics design, digital marketing, front-end web development, as well as networking and security.
The organisers said the successful participants were not only graduates of the programme, but also secured internship placements in organisations across the state.
“This practical experience is crucial in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, ensuring a smoother transition into the workforce,” the organisers stated.

Some of the programme’s exceptional graduates were awarded laptops to support their continued learning and professional development.

United Way Greater Nigeria has identified its Skills to Employment Program (STEP) as its flagship initiative. STEP equips Nigerian youth aged between 18 and 30 with digital skills to aid them in becoming adequately employed or self-employed.
It is geared towards tackling the problems of unemployment and underemployment among the teeming youth population that Nigeria currently has.
The program includes an internship period after the initial training period to enable participants to garner some practical experience before venturing into the labour market.
The Skill To Employment Programme (STEP) is ably supported by local and international donors, including Rack Centre and Lenovo, amongst others.
