The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists(NAWOJ) has urged the federal government as a matter of urgency to come to a consensus and end the four months old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The is contained in a communique signed by Helen Udofa, National Secretary of NAWOJ and issued to newsmen at the end of the National Executive Committee(NEC) meeting in Asaba, Delta State capital.
The communique added that Comrade Ladi Bala, National President of the association also discussed extensively issues concerning them and the state of the nation at the meeting.
The association in the communique called on the Federal Government to ensure that the ASUU strike is called off in the shortest possible time, to hasten the resumption of academic activities in public universities nationwide.
NAWOJ decried the alarming rate of out-of-school children in Nigeria, which according to UNICEF statistics is well over 10 million children.
It equally urged the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgent concern, address the issue of insecurity that has eaten deep into the fabric of the country, to find lasting solutions to it.
The communique further called on political parties and their candidates to promote inclusiveness and unity in Nigeria, as the nation prepares for the next general elections.
NAWOJ in the communique demanded that the National Gender policy on 35 percent Affirmative Action be implemented.
They, therefore, commended political parties who picked women as running mates in the build-up to the 2023 general elections.
