Some secondary School Students in Nasarawa State have called on leaders at all levels to imbibe the virtues of tolerance, equality, and inclusiveness in governance to entrench lasting peace and unity in the country.
The students made the call in an event to mark the 2024 Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Jofag International College in Lafia the state capital.
Speaking on the significance of the day, a school teacher, Mr.Fidelis Orvaa stated that Nigeria had a lot of lessons to learn from the principles Martin Luther King Jr. stood for while he was alive especially non-violent and civil disobedience protests in pushing for a just cause.
He stressed the need for leaders to shift attention to inculcating in the young ones the virtues of tolerance to build a peaceful society.
Some students of Jofag International College Lafia Perfect Terlumun and Daniel Nganjuwa called on leaders to learn a lesson from the positive change Americans witnessed as a result of the non-violent push for justice and an end to discrimination.
Also speaking, Fidelis Orvaa, Christabel Bede, and Precious Adofu pointed out that the famous speech of Martin Luther King Jr. inspired them to dream of a Nigeria where every citizen would be given equal opportunities.
The students stressed the need for leaders to convoke a national dialogue aimed at finding a lasting solution to the spate of insecurity across the country.
Martin Luther King Jr.Day is marked on the third Monday of January every year to remember and honor the life and legacy of civil rights crusader, Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the just cause he stood for.
