Sun Names Ebonyi State Governor’s Wife First Lady Of The Year

The Sun Newspapers has nominated the Wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, as the recipient of its First Lady of the Year Award for 2024, recognizing her outstanding contributions to humanitarian and social causes.

Receiving the nomination, Mrs. Nwifuru expressed gratitude, saying “the recognition would inspire her to do more for the people of Ebonyi and beyond.”

I never knew our efforts had drawn such attention. This award is not just for me but for every woman, child, and vulnerable person we strive to support,” she said.

Presenting the nomination, The Sun’s Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Onuoha Ukeh said the selection followed weeks of rigorous scrutiny by the Board of Editors.

As the First Lady of Ebonyi State, you have shown unwavering dedication to improving lives, championing gender equality, and expanding access to healthcare and education,” Ukeh said.

He highlighted Mrs. Nwifuru’s initiatives, including;

  • Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and IDPs Foundation, launched in 2023,
  • Cancer awareness campaigns in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health,
  • Sponsorship of surgeries for 130 scrotal hernia patients
  • Enrolling 100 sickle cell patients in the state’s health insurance scheme and,
  • Advocacy against gender-based violence and human trafficking.

The Sun First Lady of the Year Award honors Governors’ wives who have gone beyond ceremonial duties to make tangible impacts.

The formal presentation will take place on March 1, 2025, in Lagos State.
