Former Super Eagles, Ajax and Arsenal forward Nwankwo Kanu has been appointed chairman of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Enyimba FC, reuniting with former Ajax teammate George Finidi, who is the Head Coach of the Abia State-based club.
Head Coach Finidi led the State Government-owned Enyimba to a record ninth (9th) league title last season and a place in next season’s CAF Champions League.
Kanu’s appointment was announced by the newly elected Governor Alex Otti of the Southeastern State of Abia.
Kanu takes over from Felix Anyansi-Agwu, who headed the People’s Elephant for 24 years, during which the club won two CAF Champions League titles.
Super Eagles legends Kanu and Finidi were part of Louis van Gaal’s Ajax team that won the UEFA Champions League in 1995 following a 1-0 triumph over Serie A giants AC Milan, at the Ernst-Happel Stadium in Vienna, Austria.
After winning the league at the end of the Super 6 last in June 2023, Finidi spoke glowingly of attracting other ex-internationals to take up coaching roles in the league.
The Enyimba coach now has an ex-teammate as the administrator of his team as they return to the CAF Champions League in August.
Fans of Enyimba FC and football lovers would be hoping to see both ex-players bring a wealth of experience to boost Enyimba’s ambitions and the growth of Nigerian football.
John Sam Obuh, who has recently been involved with the Roma Academy in Abuja, has also been named as the chairman of another NPFL side, Abia Warriors.
