Super Eagles Target Victory Against Rwanda
The Super Eagles, having already secured their spot at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and topped Group D, are set to face Rwanda in their final qualifier on Monday. Despite the match being inconsequential for Nigeria’s qualification, head coach Augustine Eguavoen emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Eguavoen highlighted that the match is an opportunity to build consistency and foster team unity, even in the absence of key players like Ademola Lookman, Ola Aina, and Stanley Nwabali. Lookman sustained a minor injury, while Aina returned to England with Eguavoen’s approval after Nottingham Forest’s request. Nwabali was excused due to the passing of his father.
Rwanda, who still have a chance to qualify for AFCON 2025, are also in Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying group, adding an extra layer of significance to the encounter. Monday’s lineup will see Maduka Okoye return in goal, while Bright Osayi-Samuel and Bruno Onyemaechi will step in as wing-backs. The midfield options include Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Frank Onyeka, among others. In attack, Victor Osimhen, currently tied with Segun Odegbami on 23 goals, will aim to surpass the record, with support from Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, and others.
With pride at stake for Nigeria and qualification hopes alive for Rwanda, the match promises to be a competitive affair.
