Nigeria’s Surveyor General, Abuduganiyu Adebomehin has called on young professionals in the field to equip themselves with modern tools and global knowledge to remain competitive at home and abroad.

Speaking during an official visit by the Young Surveyors Network (YSN), FCT branch, Adebomehin emphasised the rising global demand for skilled Nigerian surveyors.

“We have three, four, five of our staff creating waves in the United States, some in Australia.

“But when you get there, no one will wait to teach you. You must be ready to deliver from day one,” Adebomehin said.

Adebomehin stressed the importance of mastering new surveying technologies and expert software, noting that international clients expect immediate results, not on-the-job training.

He urged aspiring surveyors to stay ahead by continually updating their knowledge and adapting to the evolving demands of the profession.

Also addressing the visitors was the Head of Hydrography at the Surveyor General’s Office,  Robert Coker who pointed out a growing gap in business acumen among new graduates, particularly from polytechnics.

“You must think like a businessperson. Many are not being taught the commercial side of surveying. Without that, you risk being underestimated by clients and losing your relevance in the profession,” Coker said.

Leading the delegation, YSN FCT Chairperson, Izuegbu Uju said the visit was part of a broader mission to enhance capacity, strengthen mentorship, and build institutional knowledge among young surveyors.

“We came to tap into the wealth of experience here and assess infrastructure.

“It’s about preparing ourselves, learning the operations of this office, and ensuring the profession doesn’t fade into irrelevance,” she said.

Oluwaseun Sherif Akinpelu, Secretary of the YSN, expressed gratitude for the warm reception and the opportunity for technical exchange.
