Officially recognised by the AMPAS, the NOSC  headed by the newly appointed chairperson, Stephanie Linus will choose one film as the country’s official submission for the IFF Award. The IFF Award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains 50% or more in a language or languages other than English. The Academy Awards requires that submitted films meet other criteria, including accurate, legible English language subtitles, shooting formats, and theatrical releases – details of which are available on the NOSC website.

On the call for submissions, the newly appointed chairperson of NOSCStephanie Linus, said, “I am honoured to take on the esteemed role of NOSC Chairperson for the Oscar Awards. I look forward to working closely with my committee members on our shared vision of promoting African filmmakers on a global platform. We now have a unique opportunity to honour the exceptional storytellers and talents whose works have entertained and connected us in many ways. I hope the decisions we make in the days ahead will inspire the next generation of filmmakers.”

The NOSC portal is open for submissions from August 28, 2023 to September 15, 2023. The 96th Oscars will occur next year on Sunday, March 10, 2024. The show will air live in more than 200 territories worldwide from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, United States.

Released in Swahili, the film tells the story of a young Indian-Zanzibari girl whose romance thrives on the back of a political revolt in the dying days of British imperial rule.

In September 2021, Vuta N’kuvute made history as the first Tanzanian feature film to ever be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Amil Shivji, the film’s co-producer  saw it as a big honour and privilege to be selected as Tanzania’s official submission to the 95th Academy awards.

He said two decades have passed since the country was recognized by the world’s most prestigious platform for cinema.

Tanzania’s first entry to the Oscars awards was Maangazi: The Ancient One, in 2002.

Oscars Award: ‘No Zoom’ policy causes backlash https://von.gov.ng/oscars-award-no-zoom-policy-causes-backlash/ https://von.gov.ng/oscars-award-no-zoom-policy-causes-backlash/#respond Fri, 26 Mar 2021 09:12:49 +0000 https://von.gov.ng/?p=23326

The “No Zoom” policy for this year’s Oscars ceremony is proving a headache for multiple nominees who live outside the United States and who are still under pandemic restrictions, according to Hollywood publications.

Variety and Deadline Hollywood reported on Wednesday that publicists and some studio executives have complained to the film academy about logistics, costs and quarantine issues raised by the decision to bar nominees from taking part in the ceremony remotely.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the ceremony, did not return a request for comment on the reports.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the April 25 show to hand out the highest honors in the movie industry will be held both at Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles and the traditional home of the Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Producers said last week that there will “not be an option to Zoom in for the show” and encouraged nominees to attend in person.

At least nine nominees, including “Promising Young Woman” director Emerald Fennell and star Carey Mulligan, live in Britain. England next week is expected to ban nonessential international travel until mid-May.

Representatives of the five international feature films – submitted by Denmark, Hong Kong, Romania, Tunisia and Bosnia – could also face hurdles getting to Los Angeles, Variety and Deadline noted.

Some of the other 200 or so nominees will be working on productions that require quarantine or living in restricted “bubbles” with cast and crew, the publications said.

Visitors to California are currently expected to quarantine for 10 days. Travelers to nations outside the United States are also subject to varying quarantine requirements.
