Team Nigeria got her Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games campaign off to a flying start as Quadri Aruna, Offiong Edem, Fatima Bello and others, secured wins in their table tennis events in the United Kingdom.
Nigeria’s top-ranked player Aruna Quadri beat Jones Shoun of South Africa 11-6, 11-3, 12-10 in the Men’s singles of table tennis.
Listed as the number two seed in the men’s team event for the games, Aruna would be hoping on his quality and experience to guide Team Nigeria to victory.
Olajide Omotayo and Omeh Amadi (Men’s Doubles)
In the Men’s tennis table doubles, Olajide Omotayo and Omeh Amadi of Nigeria defeated South Africa’s duo of Cogill Theo and Nathoo C.O.
Nigeria won the three sets with 11-5, 11-5 11-5 (3-0).
Offiong Edem and Fatima Bello (Women’s Doubles)
In the Women’s Doubles event, Offiong Edem and Fatima Bello defeated opponents Velox and Cumberbatch from St Vincent and The Grenadines 11-6, 11-2, 11-5 (3-0).
In the singles event, Offiong also won her game (11-1, 11-2, 11-3 (3-0) against Cumberbatch from St Vincent and The Grenadines.
Esther Oribamise also strolled to victory in the singles event against Delpesche of St. Vincent 11-2, 11-3, 11-2 (3-0). Other countries in the Women’s Group 1 are Hosts England and Singapore.
Nigeria currently tops Group 1 in all event ahead of St. Vincent and Grenadines, Singapore and England, with the last two to face off later on Friday.
