Multinational telecom giant Ericsson has started a creative project called Cognitive Labs, which aims to further open-source artificial intelligence (AI) research.

This was stated by Ericsson in a statement on Tuesday.

The Cognitive Labs concentrated on cutting-edge technologies including Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), Active Learning, and Large-Scale Language Models (LLMs), which are used by the company to develop its solutions, according to Mr Jean-Christophe Laneri, Head of Cognitive Network Solutions at Ericsson.

According to Laneri, the effort would function online, with teams and operations based in a few strategic places, like Madrid, Malaga, and Cairo initially, rather than having a dedicated physical facility.

He underlined that by establishing Cognitive Labs, Ericsson is reaffirming its dedication to efficiency and ongoing improvement in its technological solutions, while expanding their use to other sectors like healthcare, which could benefit society as a whole.

According to Laneri, the effort would allow Ericsson to draw in researchers and data scientists, improve client solutions, and further advance AI research in partnership with the open-source community.

“As part of our commitment to the open-source community, Cognitive Labs has established three distinct labs to continue its research activities and develop libraries as reusable components.

“These labs include the Geometric Artificial Intelligence Lab, which focuses on Geometric AI, graph generation and temporal GNNs.

“The Machine Learning and Reasoning Lab is dedicated to optimising training models and reinforcement learning, while the Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Lab focuses on creating foundational AI models, such as LLMs,” Laneri said.

Ericsson’s goal, he said, was to provide top-notch research that would help the academic community and improve their products to better serve consumers.
