TikTok Faces $10 Million Fine Over Deadly Viral Challenges

Venezuela’s Supreme Court has imposed a $10 million fine on TikTok for allegedly failing to prevent viral video challenges that authorities claim led to the deaths of three children.

In a ruling delivered on Monday, the court ordered TikTok to pay the fine to the nation’s telecommunications agency within 10 days. The court also instructed the social media platform to establish a formal office in Venezuela to ensure compliance with local laws.

The decision comes after three children, aged 12, 13, and 14, tragically died from participating in TikTok challenges involving hazardous chemical mixtures.

President Nicolás Maduro condemned these activities, highlighting their dangerous nature and calling for accountability.

The court criticised TikTok for failing to control the spread of harmful content on its platform, stating that the company bore partial responsibility for the tragic deaths. The proceeds from the fine will be used to fund compensation for the victims’ families.

TikTok has yet to comment on the ruling.

This development occurs amidst increased scrutiny of social media platforms in Venezuela, with President Maduro intensifying his criticism of TikTok and WhatsApp for allegedly enabling harmful activities. Earlier this year, Maduro urged his supporters to delete WhatsApp, calling it a tool used by “fascists” to incite violence.

This incident adds to growing global concerns about TikTok, with governments worldwide grappling with how to regulate the platform, especially concerning its influence on minors.
