TikTok Restoring Service, Still Unavailable on App Stores

On Sunday, TikTok declared that it was “in the process of restoring service,” but the app is still not accessible on Google Play or the App Store.

While Google Play states that “downloads for this app are paused due to current US legal requirements,” the App Store displays a notice that reads, “TikTok and other ByteDance apps are not available in the country or region you’re in.”

On Saturday evening, TikTok went black in the United States, shortly before the law that mandates that its owner, ByteDance, divest or risk a nationwide ban.

However, TikTok announced on Sunday that it has made a comeback for a select group of US users “in agreement” with its service providers.

The app’s pop-up states that its reinstatement is “as a result of President Trump’s efforts” and thanks users for their patience.

Requests for additional feedback have not received a response from any of the participating companies.

However, the fact that it has been restored thus far indicates that Oracle, the app’s hosting company, and Akamai, its CDN partner, are depending on Trump’s assurance that businesses that support TikTok will not be held accountable.

Other government officials, such as Republican Senator Tom Cotton, praised the app stores for taking down ByteDance apps and warned that any business that aids TikTok “may be subject to hundreds of billions of dollars in crippling legal liability, not only from DOJ but also from securities law, shareholder lawsuits, and state AGs.”
