Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully launched a large-scale clearance operation in the northeast region of Nigeria targeting a notorious terrorist enclave known as the ‘Timbuktu Triangle.’ The operation resulted in the elimination of over 70 insurgents, including three high-ranking commanders.

The three-pronged operation, which began on January 16, 2025, and is still ongoing, aims to dismantle the terrorist presence in this critical region.

According to the press statement issued by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, the terrorist commanders neutralised during the operation have been identified as TALHA (Terrorist Special Forces Commander), Mallam UMAR (Terrorist Operations Commander), and ABU YAZEED (Terrorist Brigade Commander).

The statement details the fierce resistance encountered from the terrorists, who employed a range of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), including person-borne and vehicle-borne variants, as well as the use of amateur drones.

However, the troops, well-versed in these tactics, successfully thwarted several attacks, including shooting down enemy drones.

Tragically, the operation also resulted in the loss of 22 Nigerian soldiers, with several others wounded in action. The military authorities have urged the media to refrain from publishing the names of the fallen troops to allow for the proper notification of their next of kin.

The military stated that the public will be updated on further developments in due course as the operation is ongoing.
