Emerging British-Nigerian filmmaker Kambili Ofili has made a remarkable directorial debut with her film Shaping Us, which won the prestigious Best Film: African Diaspora award at the 2024 Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival (TINFF). Earlier in the year, Shaping Us was nominated for six categories, including Best Drama, Best Film – Nollywood, Best First Film – International, and Best Film – African Diaspora.

Ofili, the founder of Clear Skies Films & Production, a black and woman-led company, has made it her mission to showcase relatable and diverse African stories using top-tier cinematography. Clear Skies Films is committed to challenging stereotypes and inspiring change, particularly through stories that resonate with African communities and the wider diaspora.

Despite having no formal industry experience, Ofili not only directed but also produced, wrote, and acted in Shaping Us. On receiving the recognition, she expressed both her gratitude and passion for storytelling, saying, “I poured my heart and soul into this film, and I’m incredibly humbled by the recognition it has received. I hope Shaping Us will spark conversations and empathy around often stigmatised topics and make viewers navigating these situations in their real lives feel seen and understood.”

Co-produced by Edith Nwakenta, Shaping Us explores the lives of six close friends as they face the challenges and triumphs of adulthood. The film delves into deeply personal and often taboo subjects such as infertility, postpartum depression, divorce, and the unbreakable bond of friendship. The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Bucci Franklin, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Omowunmi Dada, James Gardiner, Floyd Igbo, Jordan Bangoji, and a cameo from comedian Lasisi Elenu.

While the official release date has not yet been announced, the success of Shaping Us at TINFF promises that Kambili Ofili is a rising talent in the global film industry, and her work is poised to leave a lasting impact.
