The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Olanipekum Olukayode, has underscored the importance of training senior managers in security agencies as key to curbing corruption in Nigeria.

Mr. Olukayode made this known during the graduation ceremony of the Executive Leadership and Strategic Management Course, Batch 5/2024, in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Represented by the Secretary to the Commission, Mr. Mohammad Hamman-Joda, the Chairman said that “the commission would continue to train, because the criminals are always ahead, so they have to be ahead of them.”

“So, there are a lot of innovations in terms of crime, particularly crypto currency, so they have to up their game in order to catch them, if not, they will be left behind,” he added.

According to him, they have trained a total of 100 participants from the EFCC, along with other participants from sister security agencies, Department of State Security, DSS, Defence Intelligence Agency, DIA and Nigerian Army amongst others.

He noted that the training was conducted in five batches, with participants drawn from senior and middle cadres of the Commission.

“It is hoped that the knowledge gained here will impact positively on the operations of the Commission,” he added.

He appreciated the seasoned facilitators of the Nigerian Army Resource Center for the wealth of experience they have shared with their officers.

“We look forward to more collaboration in the future,” he said.

Meanwhile, he expressed their heartfelt condolences to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, the Nigerian Army and Nigerians in general on the death of Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.

Earlier, the Director General, Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Major General Garba Wahab (Retired), said that “through the training they want to bring people together, that’s the first thing, bring participants from different ministries, departments and agencies, particularly those within the security architecture, to understand themselves and to know the challenges ahead.”

“And that way, the level of collaboration and cooperation will be increased, which will provide for better performance,” he added.

According to him, the solution to Nigeria’s problems lies within them, and the solutions must come from them.

General Wahab said that “joint training is the way forward so that everybody will know their strengths and weaknesses and understand each other.”

He noted that somewhere along the line, it’s not possible for one agency to solve the security situation they are facing, not only in Nigeria, anywhere in the world.

“And above all, reach across boundaries and borders to make friends, socialize and network and that is one of the challenges he brings to the participants,” he added.

He appreciated all the management staff of the commission for being part of this program and challenging them and he also appreciate the Department of State Services, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the organization of which the center belongs to, Nigerian Army, for the belief and confidence in what they do at the center in line with their mandates which are four broad mandates, but two are pronounced.

The Class Rep of the course on-behalf of the class appreciated the organizers for grooming them into a better-informed leader.

He promised that whatever they have learned will be judiciously put into practice wherever they are deployed.

Certificates were awarded to the participants.

Meanwhile, four senior managers were decorated as part of ambassadors to fight corruption, including the Director General, Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Major General Garba Wahab (Retired).
